Oscars 2019: Makeup & Hairstylists Guild Nominations

They announced this shortlist about three weeks ago, but I wanted to wait until I was mentally ready to start thinking about Oscar season before I posted it. (Because even though I don’t read that stuff, I’m already sick and tired of what I know are the countless articles out there talking about whether or not Endgame or Joker are gonna be nominated for and win Best Picture. Hearing people ask me about that stuff is like when your relative quotes something they heard on Fox News. Spare me, please.)

But, it’s almost that time, folks. And what better way to move into Oscar season than by talking about the Makeup & Hairstylists Guild!?

It’s gonna be another two weeks or so until we get our shortlist, so for now we’re operating in a vacuum. Plus, this is the one guild that is most meaningless to the proceedings because they’re gonna shortlist seven choices and only three will be nominated, and if previous years are any indication — what wins here means nothing there. A lot of times things get left off the shortlist and a lot of times you know from the jump what’s gonna get nominated and win. But hey, the season is starting. Think of this as the first almost-snowfall before the Oscar blizzard is upon us.

Here are your 2019 Makeup & Hairstylist Guild nominees:

Best Period and/or Character Makeup

Downton Abbey

Dolemite Is My Name

Joker

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Rocketman

Yup, sounds about right.

Kinda hoping Joker doesn’t win, since it’s really just deliberately bad clown makeup, but at this point, who gives a shit. Without a shortlist, we’ve got nothing. Though I expect to see most, if not all of these on the shortlist. Maybe not Dolemite. Somehow I feel like they’d leave that one off. But all of them feel like shortlistees in a year without anything big and splashy in terms of makeup.

Best Period and/or Character Hair

Downton Abbey

Dolemite Is My Name

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Rocketman

So, same category. No Joker and Maleficent instead. Cool, I guess.

I hope Once Upon a Time gets this, though Rocketman is all about the hair. Downton Abbey is also a good, if boring, choice.

Best Contemporary Makeup

Avengers: Endgame

Bombshell

Hustlers

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Us

Ah yes, contemporary. The part no one cares about.

If Bombshell gets on, it’ll be for the hair. Us is a sneaky choice that feels like a ‘shortlist but no nomination’ kinda movie.

Endgame should be nominated if not win, just because of all the blue and green people and whatnot. Plus the money, which tends to help matters.

Best Contemporary Hair

Bombshell

Hustlers

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

Joker

The Laundromat

This all makes total sense. Weird how Joker made the Period makeup category on a character technicality, but sure.

And The Laundromat got on because of all the Meryl stuff, I’m guessing. Okay, sure.

Best Special Makeup Effects

Bombshell

Captain Marvel

It Chapter Two

Rocketman

The Irishman

Oh, wow. No Joker. THAT speaks some volumes. That’s why I’m gonna hope they don’t nominate it because some people will feel the need to vote for it when it absolutely should not win the category.

Not sure why Irishman is here, unless makeup effects means ‘little green dots’.

It makes sense though, since I’m assuming even if a lot of it is CG, they do have to put the guy in something so he can be walking around.

Captain Marvel has to be for the Skrulls, so that makes sense. And Elton… sure.

So yeah. Sans a shortlist we’ve got nothing, but nothing here seems particularly crazy. I’ll be curious to see what makes the shortlist that isn’t on here. Hopefully it’s not something really obvious, because I don’t exactly have a mental rolodex of great cinematic character transformations from this year going at the moment.
