Alright, folks. The Globes nominations have been announced, hot off the heels of yesterday’s BFCA nominations. Typically when I’m breaking down what’s gonna get nominated, I’m looking at the guilds, BAFTA, BFCA and the Globes. So that’s half the puzzle, even if the guilds is the biggest piece and involves a lot of smaller pieces for each category and this is, essentially, the latter half. But hey, we’ve got something to chew on for the next month until the real shit goes down.
I assume this is all gonna be in line with what happened yesterday, with one or two films HFPA liked more than BFCA did and some they liked less. It’s the same thing every year. Really the key with these two is to start spotting where the extraneous nominees are gonna be. Because there’s always someone who only hits BFCA and nothing else, and there are always people that hit BFCA and here, and then there’s those people that hit all this and SAG and still have no real chance at getting nominated. People fall for those traps every single year. Today’s not about making proclamations. It’s about seeing what trends are showing up and seeing which ones you actually have to pay attention to versus the ones that can be left alone.
But anyway, let’s just get into these nominations:

The Two Popes
The Two Popes. Interesting. There’s always one off the board in Drama, unless it’s a particularly strong year. That feels international enough that it makes sense. Can’t see that really being a serious contender outside of a stray acting nomination and maybe Screenplay, but hey, a lot can happen in a month.
The rest make total sense. The Globes were either gonna go all in on Marriage Story or all the way out. There was no alternative. Joker of course went on because they want ratings. I wouldn’t be surprised if Todd Phillips also got a Director nomination and a Screenplay nomination and they gave him a win in the end. Because that’s what they do.
1917 is an interesting one. Now I’ve got hope that it’s really as good as I’m hoping it is. And Irishman of course was gonna get here. They fucking love Marty.
So yeah, no real surprises and there’s nothing I’m really considering a snub, since the Globes are about what they chose, not what they didn’t.

Wow. Knives Out again is considered a comedy. And also, totally forgot about Rocketman. That’s a very Globes choice. The other three make total sense. Interesting Quentin went Comedy on it, but it makes sense. Feels like Irishman and Once Upon a Time are being set up to be the big two contenders, aren’t they?
The Globes, though… they love trying to spot what the contenders are. So I wanna see what they end up doing. But I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by this. I felt like they probably could have picked something better for that Rocketman spot, but they love Elton and I’m not remotely shocked they went there.
So far so good with what I’m seeing. The individuals are where it’s gonna start to get interesting.

Bong Joon Ho! Well, that answers that question. Parasite didn’t get a Best Picture nomination because of that weird technicality clause in their rules. This is as good as one to me. So at this point, if it gets on either PGA or BAFTA, it’s looking like we have ourselves a Best Picture nominee on our hands.
I knew Phillips was on here, and Marty and Quentin were locks. Sam Mendes makes sense, seeing that they went with him in Picture too. So yeah, the only talking point with this is Bong Joon Ho. Otherwise, business as usual.

Oh, well that’s interesting. They went with Bale over Damon, went all in on Two Popes. That means Hopkins got the Supporting nomination. Joaquin and Driver were gimmes. Banderas has now hit the Globes and BFCA, which is gonna be interesting. I’ll need to see him hit SAG or BAFTA to really consider him a major contender, but at this point, these two is gonna be a big step forward to having him in that final grouping in the end. SAG always tells the tale in this category anyway. I’m really curious if he can swing one this year.
No De Niro is probably what most people’s talking point is gonna be on this category. But HFPA is all about who makes ratings and who they like. Does Bob seem like the kinda guy that’s gonna charm them in an interview room? I doubt it. So I’m not really that surprised he didn’t get on. In De Niro’s entire career, he’s been nominated for 9 Globe Awards. The first four are Taxi Driver, New York New York, Deer Hunter and Raging Bull. Then Midnight Run. Then Cape Fear. Then Analyze This and Meet the Parents. The only other one was that Madoff TV movie. They don’t really vote for him all that much. So I’m not surprised to see him get left off here. He didn’t even get on for Silver Linings when everyone was salivating for that movie. So this isn’t a snub so much as it is standard practice for HFPA.

Well, Eddie, Leo and Taron were gimmes. Craig makes sense. They want him and his wife there and they can both have him present and plug Bond. Davis is the cool addition. That makes me happy. And it makes me wonder if they nominated Taika for Hitler. My guess is no, but I’m not ruling it out. I suspect Scarlett and/or McKenzie got on as well.
Still dumbfounded that Knives Out is being considered a comedy. Otherwise, it all makes total sense. The leads of all five of the Best Picture nominees got on here. I assume Leo wins this, but maybe they’re feeling Eddie or maybe they just love Taron Egerton. Not sure it’s really gonna matter unless they’re trying to get Leo #2.

Interesting. Little Women went Drama. That’s why I haven’t seen it nominated yet.
It’s also, based solely on what I see here, shaping up that this is your Best Actress category. Lupita and Awkwafina also got BFCA nominations, but Lupita would for sure be considered Drama and Awkwafina should be going in the next category. Lupita should get SAG, since it’s big and broad and everyone loves her. Without that, it’s BFCA and bust for her. Awkwafina needs SAG or BAFTA to be considered a real contender. At this point, Erivo doesn’t feel like she should get on, but barring any other choices (where there seem to not be this year), she just might slide right in there. Zellweger, being the best ‘on paper’ choice, should easily go in as the frontrunner for a nomination, though I’ll say it again… unless they’re making a play for it to be Saoirse’s year (which would be tough, since this is the fourth Little Women version out there, though admittedly I’ve yet to see the film), this looks like it’s gonna be Scarlett’s to lose. Unless everyone rallies around Judy (which would be hilarious), this is all set up for Scarlett to win it, assuming they can campaign it correctly.

Cate! Oh fuck yeah. I’m so happy they nominated her. She stands zero chance at a nomination, but to me she gave a better performance in her film than the three Drama nominees I’ve seen so far.
Love that de Armas got on here. Don’t think this is her year to be nominated but it’s gonna help for next year when she’s got Marilyn Monroe coming.
Awkwafina holds pace, though it’s the big two that’ll decide if there’s enough support for her out there.
Feldstein should have gotten this. She’s tremendous in that movie. And you knew they were gonna find a way to get that on somewhere. Though it’s interesting they didn’t force it into the Picture list.
And Emma Thompson… did anyone not think that was gonna happen?
Conventional wisdom says Awkwafina should win this, but I don’t trust HFPA. They’re gonna go off the board on this because they know Drama is where it’s at. So rather than trying to game the system, they’ll vote with their hearts. And you’ll get something different, most likely. Which will either be de Armas or Thompson, I’m guessing.

That’s the BFCA list, minus Dafoe, who was the extra nominee anyway. I wondered if they’d leave one of the Irishman people off, given the De Niro omission, but that’s a De Niro thing, clearly. Otherwise, Pitt, Hopkins, Hanks… you had to have expected those. Pesci, Pacino… also the norm so far. No extra surprise here. Pretty much as expected.
I’m starting to wonder if Pitt’s got a legitimate chance at taking this down in the end. This’ll be interesting to see how things shape up.

This is why I hate the Globes. It’s a fucking popularity contest. At least here they had a legitimate case to vote for Laura Dern, but it’s still because they love her. She’ll get the Oscar nomination for the same reason.
Jennifer Lopez is so she’ll show up. Margot Robbie is so she’ll show up. Neither are legitimate Oscar contenders until the big places start nominating them (and even then, I need to see the full scope of the category).
Bates makes her first play, and looks like she’ll pull the veteran move of sliding in at the end. She won NBR, so that’s shaping up nicely.
Bening is just a popularity vote. She’s playing Diane Feinstein. And it’s in a movie nobody saw. Complete blank of a nomination.
I wanted to see Zhao Shuzhen get on in the end, but without this, it’ll be tough to make the full case for her. Since I doubt she’s in SAG, so that eliminates that possibility. So now I’ve gotta hope BAFTA goes in for her. If not, we’re basically just calling a shot. So oh well.
And I’m surprised they didn’t double dip on Scarlett. That felt like a real easy one for them in a weak year. And considering how poorly Little Women has done so far, I wasn’t holding my breath on Florence. Though no Meryl… kinda glad they didn’t rush to nominate her.
In the end, no real help, it seems. But again, we’ve got a month to really know for sure.

That’s all very HFPA. Irishman and Marriage Story and Quentin were gimmes. Two Popes was assured the minute it got the Picture nomination. And Parasite… clearly they love that movie. That’s like Roma. That… if it wins here, means they’d have given it Picture.
Otherwise, they vote for the writer over the script. So I’m not overly surprised. Plus it’s a single category. So you’ve got three originals and two adaptations. Oh, wait… Two Popes is original, isn’t it? So wow. Only one adaptation. Good on them. Mostly original stuff here.
No Joker, too. Which makes me happy. That means they nominated it just to look cool and don’t really love it.

Motherless Brooklyn. HILARIOUS. That’s their way of giving Norton something because they like him without acknowledging that they probably didn’t like the film.

I can’t wait to hear Desplat’s Little Women score or Thomas Newman’s 1917 score.
Otherwise, cool. This Score category is meaningless, though eventually it’ll be helpful in guessing what they’ll nominate, especially now that they give us a shortlist. I’m sure all five of these will eventually be on it.

A HA HA HA HA HA HA. The Lion King as animated.
I mean, technically that is a true statement. It’s more of an animated film than The Lego Movie was. The Lego Movie had whole live action sequences. Lion King has only one non-animated shot.
But also, that’s fucking hysterical. Rather than help us with what the fifth nominee is gonna be, between Abominable, I LostMy Body and Weathering with You, they straight up went off the board. That’s so goddamn funny.
So yeah, basically now what we know is that we’ve got 4/5 of the Animated Feature category locked, and knowing the Globes, Lion King will win this and completely take themselves off the board when it comes to prognosticating in the end.

This is exactly the BFCA list, but with The Farewell on instead of Atlantics. Because with the Globes, as long as it’s in a foreign language, it counts. Letters from Iwo Jima got on this list in 2006. And I think it won, too. So yeah, not surprised.
Only three of these are eligible for the Oscar and we still have to wait for a shortlist to make sure they’re even on it before we start figuring out if they’re gonna be nominated. So for now… more of the same that we already figured.

Ah, The Morning Show. Of course. Gotta get Reese and Jen there. Reese is already gonna be there for Big Little Lies, but this way, you don’t nominate her and nominate Jen and she has a reason to go to support both shows. Sneaky, sneaky, guys.
Guessing this is the year of Phoebe Waller-Bridge. They’re either one something early and then drop it or they’re way too late. And I’m thinking with all the other acclaim, they’re gonna look to get her up there as high profile as they can. Doubt it’s here, but I’m just setting the stage for what I’m sure is to come after.
Succession, I imagine, is their shit. Though maybe it isn’t and Big Little Lies wins again (didn’t it win last year?). I don’t know. I don’t really care, either.

Knowing them, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Politician won this category, though I suspect either they’re going all in on Phoebe Waller-Bridge and are gonna give her both or Maisel will win.
