Two more guilds announced today. The first of which is CAS, the Cinema Audio Society. That’s for Sound Mixing. Mixing is the sound design as a whole, versus Editing, which is the compilation and creation of those sounds. Though we might not need that distinction in the future, since the Academy is considering going back to just one ‘Sound’ category like how BAFTA does it, given the substantial overlap between the categories and the general lack of distinction between the two by voters. But that’s not the case this year, so this one’s for Sound Mixing.
Basically we’re gonna take this, MPSE (Sound Editors guild) and BAFTA and then guess what’s gonna get nominated from that. Though at this point, you have a pretty damn good guess at for sure 2 of the 5 nominees, if not 3. So I don’t think it’s gonna be all that difficult in the end.
Here are this year’s CAS nominees:
Best Sound Mixing
Ford v Ferrari
Joker
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Rocketman
The Irishman
Interesting. No 1917. Can’t imagine that stands. CAS only nominates five in a single category, so stuff like that happens. MPSE has three major categories, so that leads to stuff getting in. Plus you know BAFTA’s gonna have 1917, so that’ll be fine.
Otherwise, was there any doubt about Ford v Ferrari or Once Upon a Time? Those were made for Sound Mixing. Joker, sure. No real opinion there. Rocketman is a musical, so that makes sense. And Irishman, sure.
So yeah. There’s the category. It exists in a vacuum until we get the other two. BAFTA is in January, but MPSE is Friday. So we’ll be most of the way set by then.
Oh, also, while I’m here:
Animated nominees were Abominable, Frozen II, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Lion King and Toy Story 4. Again, Lion King is considered an animated film. I wonder if they submitted it as such if it could have gotten nominated or if people would have just been confused. Otherwise, no Missing Link (which makes some sense), but 3 of the other 4 locks for the Animated category and Abominable again. Honestly at this point you have to assume Abominable is the de facto fifth nominee and then see if any guild supports either an I Lost My Body or Weathering with You sneak in. Right now, Weathering with You has missed two of the three major precursors that were left, post-Annies, while I Lost My Body got on BFCA, but so did the other five. It’s gonna come down to BAFTA, though they only nominate three films, and if they do Lion King, Frozen and Toy Story, then there’s literally no empirical case to make for anything other than Abominable for that fifth spot and then you just wait and see what they do.
Meanwhile, Documentary nominees were: Apollo 13, Echo in the Canyon, Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool and Woodstock: 3 Days That Changed Everything. Mostly I put those there to say — do you really think the documentary about sound mixing isn’t gonna win at the guild of sound mixers?
But yeah, that’s CAS.
Costume Designers nominees coming at you as soon as I write them up.
