The American Cinema Editors announced the nominees for their Eddie Awards.
This should give us a good idea of what films they like best in the Best Picture race. This is where I wanna see if Parasite gets on. That’s the big one for me. Everything else should be pretty obvious. We know Thelma’s on, we know Quentin’s movie is on, we know Ford v Ferrari is on. So really it’s just what else made it. Rocketman in Musical/Comedy, probably Jojo in Comedy. This stuff is easy. It’s really just about what it tells us for the Oscars. So let’s see what we’ve got.
Here are the ACE nominees:
Best Editing (Dramatic)
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Joker
Marriage Story
Parasite
And there’s Parasite. I guess Quentin went in Comedy, because the rest of these make sense. Marriage Story even makes sense. That’s one where you see if they put it at the Oscars, because that means they really like it. Joker shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone either.
So yeah, the big one is Parasite. That movie’s gonna get nominated, kids.
Best Editing (Comedy)
Dolemite Is My Name
The Farewell
Jojo Rabbit
Knives Out
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Knives Out again in Comedy. Jesus.
But wow, no Rocketman, good for them. They went with classy nominees. The Farewell is the surprise, moderately. Not that it’ll make the Oscar list, but because they didn’t go for the flashy musical.
The rest make sense. Dolemite is that kinda movie and Jojo and Quentin were obvious. Forgot about Knives Out, since apparently every voting body up to this point has done the same. So yeah, about what I expected.
They also nominated Frozen II, Toy Story II and I Lost My Body for Animated. So there’s that. And American Factory, Apollo 11, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice and Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound for the Documentary category. The rest are all TV or things I don’t care about.
So yeah, that’s Editing. BAFTA is the big one for Editing. They’re the most helpful of anyone, in a lot of ways, so I’m gonna wait to see what they do. But it’s hard not to think that we don’t already know 3/5 of the Editing category right off the bat (Irishman, Once Upon a Time, Ford v Ferrari). The other two are gonna be what movies have the play for Best Picture. Parasite looks like #4, and we’ll see what looks to be #5 once we have all the information. Oh, wait… 1917. Right. That’s in there too. So yeah, that could just be your category. And then whichever film lands with them the least is the likely castoff for the Best Picture nominee with the most momentum (i.e. Marriage Story getting on like Dallas Buyers Club did over something we all assumed would get on because it had nominations).
This is it, folks. We’re almost done. MPSE announces Friday, then we get a shit ton of shortlists on Monday, and that’s it for the year. Then we pack it up and sit on it all until we get back in January and then shit starts getting real.
