Two more precursors for you, ahead of this weekend’s bonanza (5 on Saturday and Sunday), VES and CDG.
We’ll start with CDG, just because they’ll be quicker. Cruella won for Period Costumes, Dune won for Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Coming 2 America won for Contemporary. Dune was the only Oscar nominee in its category, but Cruella ended up beating Cyrano, Nightmare Alley and West Side Story, which makes me think it’s probably the favorite to win the Oscar at the moment (though we’ll know for sure on Sunday when BAFTA and BFCA announce).
Meanwhile, at VES, Dune won four awards, Best Effects, Outstanding Model, Effects Simulations, Compositing and Lighting. Last Night in Soho won Supporting Effects, Finch won for Animated Character, Spider-Man: No Way Home won for Created Environment, and Jungle Cruise won for Practical Effects. Meanwhile, Encanto won almost all the animated awards (Animated Effects, Animated Character, Created Environment), losing only Effects Simulations to Raya and the Last Dragon. It even won Virtual Cinematography over Shang-Chi and Godzilla. Spider-Man and Shang-Chi were the only two other nominees nominated outside Best Effects (No Time to Die was only nominated for Best Effects and Free Guy wasn’t nominated at all), and Shang-Chi lost to Dune or Encanto the entire way, and Spider-Man managed to beat Dune in Created Environment only. Basically what this tells you is that Dune has the Visual Effects category and Encanto has Animated Feature on lock, in case you somehow didn’t already know that.
