2021: The Year in Reviews (Wrap-Up)

I guess this is more like “The Site in Reviews,” since this is gonna be the last one and we’re gonna wrap-up 11 years’ worth of reviews.

You know how this works — I guessed ratings back in January and now I see how close I was with everything. Though now, rather than being focused with personal goals like guessing everything either exactly or within a half-star, I’m curious to see what kind of site-long data trends come about.

So let’s wrap this shit up and see what we find.

Normally I do these comparisons over the course of the twelve days before this one (‘On the twelfth day of reviews…’), but for obvious reason this year I didn’t. So we’re gonna start with tables of each month to quickly run down what ratings I guessed for each of the films I watched back in January (if I did) and what ratings I actually gave them. Then afterward I’ll ad all that up and figure out whatever the average rating was for that month. And since I have average ratings for every year I’ve done this, I’ll then figure out a singular average rating for each month of the year over the course of the 11 years I’ve done this. Should be interesting.

But aside from seeing how close each of those singular ratings ends up being to the monthly rating for this particular year, I’m also curious to see if each month this year ends up fitting into that general range of a monthly rating, just because this year, above all others, I didn’t watch movies the way I normally do. Most years, I’ll start watching in earnest in late January, early February. This year, because Oscar eligibility included films in January and February, I watched stuff in those months and then watched literally nothing until the summer. I only managed to finish all of March’s movies (I was watching stuff chronologically as well, one month at a time) over Labor Day weekend. For comparison, on November 1st, I had only watched around 140 movies from this year total. Most other years I hit that total by Memorial Day. It was a weird year for watching. And I’m curious if the ratings still end up being the same as they usually are. Guess we’ll see.

(Note: I’ll update December with the last couple of films I need to see, as I see them.)

I watched 22 films from January and the average rating was 3.20. That’s the highest January I’ve ever had. Though this was a very different kind of January, so I get it. Normally this is a dumping ground, but streaming has started increasing the average rating here of late, plus this year we had Oscar eligibles. So it makes sense that it would be higher.

Previous January ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.70
  • 2012 — 2.86
  • 2013 — 2.75
  • 2014 — 2.40

  • 2017 — 2.70
  • 2018 — 2.95
  • 2019 — 3.10
  • 2020 — 2.95

Adding all of that together, that means, for the entirety of this site, my average January rating was 2.83.

I watched 31 films from February and the average rating was 3.15. That seems to be the new average for this month since the proliferation of streaming (though the Oscar stuff helped too). That’s almost exactly what the rating’s been for the past two Februarys.

Previous February ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.25
  • 2012 — 2.15
  • 2013 — 2.59
  • 2014 — 2.92
  • 2015 — 3.00

  • 2017 — 3.03
  • 2018 — 2.85

I watched 18 films from March and the average rating was 3.03. That’s about standard fare for March, so nothing out of the ordinary there. March is one of those odd months where they release all types of stuff. The first of the blockbusters tend to come out here, though a lot of those tend to be ‘dumps’ because they don’t think they can hang in summer (or they’re from places like Marvel, who have a bunch coming out and just needed to slot something earlier so as not to step on the toes of all the other ones). Still, you can usually count on March as a whole to just be ‘okay’.

Previous March ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.70
  • 2012 — 2.80
  • 2013 — 2.98
  • 2014 — 3.14
  • 2015 — 2.89
  • 2016 — 3.21
  • 2017 — 3.16
  • 2018 — 3.03
  • 2019 — 3.06
  • 2020 — 3.18

My average March rating over 11 years is almost exactly the same as March of this year: 3.02.

The Virtuoso 3 3

I watched 20 films from April and the average rating was 3.05. Again, just about part of the norm. In my head, April has historically always been one of the most consistent months, and the data seems to bear that out. There’s never really any big budget stuff in April. Usually it’s just stuff they didn’t feel fit anywhere else, plus some Easter-type stuff. April is definitely the most hodgepodge of months in terms of what gets put out.

Previous April ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.90
  • 2012 — 2.85
  • 2013 — 2.88
  • 2014 — 2.81
  • 2015 — 2.92
  • 2016 — 3.08
  • 2017 — 2.89
  • 2018 — 2.97
  • 2019 — 3.07
  • 2020 — 3.19

Over the course of the site, my average April rating is 2.96.

I watched 22 films from May and the average rating was 3.26. That makes this the highest May on record, which I think is because a lot of the blockbusters (which would normally pull this rating down closer to 3) were pushed later in the hopes of getting them in theaters with a proper audience. Which meant those solid streaming gems are what propelled the rating.

Previous May ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.81
  • 2012 — 3.10
  • 2013 — 3.22
  • 2014 — 2.98
  • 2015 — 3.02

  • 2017 — 3.06
  • 2018 — 3.02
  • 2019 — 3.02
  • 2020 — 3.05

Over the course of the site, my average May rating is 3.06.

Zola 3.5 3.5

I watched 24 films from June and the average rating was 3.10. June is also a pretty consistent month, as you can see, with 5 out of 11 years having ratings within .02 of one another. This was the month theaters started opening back up this year, but I will also say, a lot of what came out this month before F9 feels like April fare to me. It feels like they’re just putting stuff out and biding their time for summer to officially start. They kept waiting for that okay to feel safe about putting stuff in a lot of theaters.

Previous June ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.10
  • 2012 — 3.06
  • 2013 — 3.03
  • 2014 — 3.16

Over the course of the site, my average June rating is 3.14.

I watched 36 films from July and the average rating was 3.10. Notice how each of the summer months all hover around 3.00. That’s because of the amount of bland-but-watchable blockbusters that cram these months. You can always count on the summer to be the same, theaters or no theaters. Though this month was definitely a ‘toe in the water’ for them. Stuff came out, but they totally hedged their bets here. Even Black Widow went day and date because they weren’t fully sure if enough people would go (or be able to go) to theaters. Still, this is the most ‘standard’ summer month we had this year.

Previous July ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.10
  • 2012 — 3.31
  • 2013 — 2.84
  • 2014 — 2.95

I watched 26 films from August and the average rating was 3.12. This is one of the higher Augusts on record. But it also always tends to hang around 3.00, largely because this is where they dump the big budget stuff they have no faith in and also the toe-in-the-water awards stuff. This is also, as you can see, one of the most consistent months.

Previous August ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.80
  • 2012 — 3.02
  • 2013 — 2.83
  • 2014 — 2.78

I watched 34 films from September and the average rating was 3.09. Wow. September is pretty consistent too. I guess it makes sense. They dump a lot of genre stuff around Labor Day because they know people don’t really watch movies when school is starting and also dump the nominal awards stuff they see mixed reactions for.

Previous September ratings:

  • 2011 — 2.97

I watched 36 films from October and the average rating was 3.26. This is where the awards stuff starts to permeate the schedule, which is why there’s such a big jump in rating. You’ll see the rating go up pretty consistently throughout the rest of the year for that reason. October, though, is always hampered by the bad horror stuff they put out for Halloween.

Previous October ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.10
  • 2012 — 3.31
  • 2013 — 3.29

I watched 34 films from November and the average rating was 3.35. November’s rating tends to fluctuate solely based on how I respond to the awards stuff. It’s always gonna be solid even despite the proliferation of terrible seasonal Netflix rom coms. Plus Thanksgiving weekend and two weeks before that tend to be the big major release weekends as well. So if that stuff ends up good, November tends to go higher for me.

Previous November ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.50
  • 2012 — 3.66

I watched 37 films from December and the average rating was 3.32. Which is spot on for what December has become over the past few years and still makes it the highest-rated month of the year, which makes sense.

Previous December ratings:

  • 2011 — 3.80
  • 2012 — 3.70
  • 2013 — 3.67
  • 2014 — 3.37
  • 2015 — 3.57
  • 2016 — 3.41
  • 2017 — 3.31
  • 2018 — 3.44
  • 2019 — 3.21
  • 2020 — 3.37

Over the course of the site, the average December rating was 3.47.

– – – – –

So yeah, that’s how the average monthly ratings shook out. I decided to order them from highest to lowest just to get an idea:

  • December – (3.47)
  • November – 3.37
  • October – 3.21
  • June – 3.14
  • July – 3.07
  • May – 3.06
  • September – 3.04
  • March – 3.02
  • August – 2.99
  • April – 2.96
  • January – 2.83
  • February – 2.83

I mean, not surprising at all. The three highest months are where the awards stuff comes out, the next highest are all the summer months, the two lowest are the dumping ground months and those lower ones are the ‘box of chocolates’ months where you never know what you’re gonna get. All makes total sense to me. Which would then, if I averaged all that out, mean that if I watched any old random movie, the most likely rating I would give it is 3.08. Which honestly feels like what my average rating was for each of those years. But since I do actually calculate that longways, we’ll get to it.

So next I’m gonna take all the data from those tables and break down how accurate all my guesses were. This used to be the part I looked forward to most, but at this point, after last year when I managed to guess every single movie I watched (and guessed a rating for) within a half-star, there’s not really much left for me to achieve. So mostly I’m just hoping I do about as well as I usually do here.

So, based on that, there were 277 films that I saw and also guessed ratings for. I guessed 203 of them correctly, 73 a half-star off and only 1 a full-star off. Which put me at a solid 73.3% in guessing things exactly, which is about what I’m normally at. Maybe one day I’d have gotten to 75%, but oh well. That’s close enough.

2 stars: A Week Away

Films I’ve Yet to See: The Perfect Candidate, Mandibles, Jockey

Average Rating for 2021:

5 4.5-star films

30 4-star films

114 3.5-star films

137 3-star films

60 2.5-star films

1 2-star films

Which would put an average rating for this year around 3.18. Which is pretty high. Though I have noticed over the past few years that I can’t be bothered to hate stuff and generally can make myself okay with most things or at the very worst indifferent. So that’s probably what that owes to.

Previous average ratings:

  • 2015: 3.13
  • 2016: 3.16
  • 2017: 3.08
  • 2018: 3.09
  • 2019: 3.13
  • 2020: 3.15

So based on all of that, that means that my average film rating for the past seven or so years (since I guess I didn’t do this calculation before then) is 3.13. So with the 3.08 from up there, that means about on average I will guess a film somewhere in the 3.1 range. Which I guess bears out with all the data. So that’s cool. Not sure what it means in the end except that I watch a lot of movies and can actually calculate this sort of thing, but at least it amuses me. Which is really all we need.

So yeah, that’s that. The top ten list is delayed mostly owing to me not having the time to write it up. So it’ll go up when it goes up. I already said I was gonna probably be tweaking it for the first couple weeks of January anyway, so I’m not overly worried about getting it up by a certain time. Unlike five years ago, I don’t feel the need to rush it before it’s ready.

Which, see that? Growth.
