Oscars 2015: Best Makeup & Hairstyling Shortlist

You know what I love about the Best Makeup & Hairstyling Shortlist? It’s only 7 films. And of the 7, three will be nominated. And you can usually guess how it’s gonna go.

Here, we have six films everybody knows, and one that came completely out of nowhere. (And watch it get nominated.)

Here is your shortlist for Best Makeup & Hairstyling:

Black Mass

Concussion

Legend

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mr. Holmes

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared

The Revenant

I haven’t given any thought to what could be here instead, so I’ll focus on what is here.

The obvious one, at least for me, to start with is Concussion. I’m not really sure what the makeup job was in that movie? Was it on Will Smith? Was it on David Morse? I honestly have no idea what this one was about. It’s also one of those movies that’s almost assured of not getting any nominations. So I’m going to assume it won’t get on until it does.

Next is Mr. Holmes. I guess it could, but it’s more of a low key makeup job for a film not many people have seen or care about. I know the Makeup Guild goes more for what the best job is than what film it’s for, but you look at what typically gets nominated — this doesn’t seem to stand a chance.

Next — Legend. Intriguing. Tom Hardy playing twins. The job on him as Ron Kray was really nice. But again, a film that’s likely to get shut out completely, and I don’t think they’d go for it. My gut tells me no go here.

The wild card is the 100 year old man film. I know nothing about it except it’s about a dude who is 100 years old. Which means makeup. Not knowing anything about the quality of the film or analyzing it from a quality perspective (since I think we should all know by now, what they vote for does not always — or usually — correlate to how good a film is), it would seem strange to me to see them nominate this. Not to say they couldn’t or even won’t. It feels unlikely. But I’m leaving my mind open. I’ll decide when I actually start thinking about this category in a month.

To me, the obvious category is the three remaining films. Mad Max seems like a lock at this point. Black Mass has a clear makeup job and I feel like they like that. (Hey, if they didn’t have a problem with Foxcatcher and the nose, they shouldn’t have a problem with this.) And then The Revenant is a western, a lot of bear wounds and things of that sort. If they do even half of the shit that’s in the script, it should be nominated.

If guessing likelihood to be nominated (apropos of nothing), I’d say:

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. The Revenant
  3. Black Mass
  4. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared
  5. Mr. Holmes
  6. Legend
  7. Concussion
