Oscars 2021: Makeup & Hairstylists Guild Awards + SDSA Awards

The first two precursors have been handed out. First, the Makeup + Hairstylists Guild.

There, Cruella won Period/Character Makeup, Being the Ricardos won Period Hair, and Coming 2 America won Contemporary Makeup, Contemporary Hair and Special Makeup Effects. All five nominees were represented in those categories. Coming 2 America was the only nominee in Contemporary, so it makes sense that it swept those. And it has the most transformations of any film, so it winning Effects also is no surprise. Cruella winning Period/Character is interesting, since you’d think they’d be all over Dune. But there you are. I still say Dune is the favorite for the Oscar, but we’ll wait to see what happens at BAFTA and BFCA.

Meanwhile, in SDSA, the Set Decorators awards that are only in their second year: Being the Ricardos won Period, No Time to Die won Contemporary, French Dispatch won for Musical/Comedy (deservingly so) and Dune won Fantasy. Meanwhile they handed out a general ‘Best Picture’ category (which I’m honestly surprised more guilds don’t do), which went to Power of the Dog. Not that we needed the help knowing that was gonna win Picture.

What’s most interesting about SDSA is how Dune is the only Oscar-nominated film that won. Nightmare Alley, Power of the Dog and West Side Story all lost to non-nominees. Tragedy of Macbeth, losing to Dune, is the only nominee that lost to another nominee. It’s weird to me when things get nominated yet lose at their guilds to stuff that isn’t nominated. But we’ll wait until ADG and BAFTA to get a fuller idea of what’s actually going on there. Again, I think Dune is probably an easy winner here. But we’ll see which way the rest of the precursors go.

Anyway, SAG is Sunday, so you won’t be hearing from me until after that.
