So, for those keeping score — me — on my personal ballot, where I went against my choices of Lupita Nyong’o and Spike Jonze, I got 20 out of 24 correct. I missed those two, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay, along with Best Picture (went with Gravity as a personal choice) and Best Animated Short. Which is a category I probably would have had if I didn’t let that “open vote” thing get to me. But even then, I said that Mr. Hublot was winning if Get a Horse! wasn’t. So I do not feel bad about that at all. Plus I somehow got the other two shorts right, along with Foreign Language and Documentary Feature, so I’m still really happy about that.
And, even better — the ballot I told you to take — which is the ballot I’d probably have turned in if I was picking at an Oscar party — I got 22/24 right. I missed Best Animated Short and Best Editing. I told you to take Captain Phillips even though I personally took Gravity.
So, putting all those combined, I basically was right there on every single category, and I had the winner on one of my “two” ballots. And the only one I got wrong on both was Animated Short, which I said flat out who the two contenders were.
So basically that adds up to this year not holding any surprises whatsoever.
Gravity wins 7 Oscars. It only loses Picture, Actress and Production Design.
12 Years a Slave wins 3, but a big three.
Dallas Buyers Club wins 3 Oscars.
Frozen and The Great Gatsby win 2 Oscars.
And, actually, throw in a win for Her and Blue Jasmine and that’s all of them. So basically five movies took home all the Oscars. The rest are the three shorts, Foreign Language and Documentary. So five movies took home 17 of the 19 Oscars.
American Hustle gets shut out. Nyong’o winning was the first tip off, then it losing Production Design told me for sure. The Costume loss wasn’t horrible, but an early sign. And once Screenplay happened, it was over.
I’ll say this later on (I’m gonna post a live blog of the event in a minute or two), but I actually think they might have gotten it right this year. I mean, they were easy as shit to guess, but I think they made good decisions all around. Though I guess that’s because at least 10 of them were easy decisions, but still. I think they got it right and didn’t fall into any traps. Good for them.
Live blog coming shortly, and full analysis tomorrow.
